How Scammer Guardian Works

Scammer Guardian uses AI to answer unknown calls before they reach your parent's phone. The AI asks the caller to identify themselves, makes a decision in 2-3 seconds, and either passes the call through or blocks it. You get an instant SMS alert when a scam is blocked. Setup takes 2 minutes.

How the AI screens a call

When a number not in your parent's contacts dials their phone, Scammer Guardian intercepts the call before it rings. The AI answers, asks the caller a simple question ("Hi, who's calling and what is this regarding?"), and listens to the response. In 2-3 seconds, it decides:

  • Pass: A legitimate caller (a doctor's office, a real person, a confirmed family member) is connected through. Your parent's phone rings normally.
  • Block: A scam pattern (urgency, threats, government impersonation, payment requests, voice cloning) is detected. The call is silently rejected. You get an SMS alert with the AI's reasoning, a recording, and a transcript.

The AI cannot be sweet-talked, pressured, intimidated, or fooled by emotional manipulation. It catches the warning signs that humans, especially trusting seniors, miss.

How it works on iPhone

iPhone has stricter call control than Android, so Scammer Guardian uses Apple's official VoIP framework (CallKit + PushKit) to intercept calls. Setup involves a one-time call-forwarding code (*72) that routes unknown calls to our screening number. The Scammer Guardian app then receives a VoIP push notification when a call passes screening, and the call rings on the iPhone exactly like a normal call.

What your parent sees: Their iPhone rings as it always has. The caller ID shows the real caller. They answer normally.

What scammers see: They get the AI on the line. They never reach your parent.

Setup time: ~2 minutes (most of that is dialing the *72 code once).

How it works on Android

Android allows third-party apps to register as the device's call screener. Scammer Guardian uses Android's native CallScreeningService API to intercept incoming calls at the OS level, before the phone rings, before voicemail, before any notification fires. The AI screens in the background, and only verified-safe calls ever reach the phone.

What your parent sees: Their Android phone rings as it always has when a real caller is approved.

Setup time: ~2 minutes. One permission prompt during onboarding to set Scammer Guardian as the default phone app.

What you (the guardian) see

Every screened call generates a record in your guardian dashboard:

  • Caller number (and CNAM/caller ID lookup if available)
  • Verdict: PASS or BLOCK
  • AI reasoning: Why the AI made the decision (e.g., "Caller claimed to be from the IRS and demanded immediate payment via gift cards.")
  • Transcript of the AI's conversation with the caller
  • Recording (auto-deleted after 90 days for privacy)

You also get:

  • Real-time SMS alerts when a scam is blocked, with the AI's one-line summary
  • Daily email summary every morning showing all calls from the previous day
  • Weekly email report with trends and the most common scam types your parent was targeted by

What about real callers, won't they get blocked?

This is the #1 question we get. The answer: legitimate callers identify themselves naturally. When the AI asks "Hi, who's calling?", a real person says "Hi, this is Sarah from Dr. Patterson's office calling to confirm tomorrow's appointment." The AI hears that, recognizes the legitimate intent, and connects the call. The caller never knows they were screened.

You can also:

  • Whitelist anyone in your dashboard, including your parent's entire contact list (auto-imported during setup). Whitelisted callers ring through instantly with zero screening.
  • Auto-whitelist returning callers. If a caller passed screening once, they're automatically trusted next time.
  • Whitelist by area code. If your parent lives in a small town and you want every local-area-code call to ring through, you can do that.

In our internal data, fewer than 1% of legitimate first-time callers are blocked, and any errors can be corrected in one tap from the SMS alert.

Three things scammers can't get past

  1. The AI cannot be rushed. Every scam relies on urgency. The AI doesn't have urgency. It will calmly ask follow-up questions until the caller's intent is clear.
  2. The AI cannot be guilted. Grandparent scams ("Grandma, it's me, I'm in jail and need bail money") only work on humans with emotional reactions. The AI hears "grandchild in distress" + "money request" and immediately flags it.
  3. The AI cannot be impersonated. Spoofed caller IDs (the IRS, Social Security, Microsoft, Amazon) don't matter, because the AI doesn't trust caller ID. It only trusts the content of what the caller says.

Setup, end to end

  1. Sign up at scammerguardian.com/sign-up (30 seconds: name, email, your parent's name, phone number, phone type).
  2. Download the app on your phone and your parent's phone (App Store or Google Play).
  3. One-time setup on your parent's phone (~2 minutes, guided in-app).
  4. Add whitelist contacts (auto-imported from your parent's contacts).
  5. Done. Protection runs silently from then on.

You'll get your first scam-blocked alert within 48 hours on average.

Frequently confused: what Scammer Guardian is NOT

  • It is not a number-blocking app. Apps like Nomorobo, RoboKiller, and Truecaller use blocklists: databases of known scam numbers. They miss any new scam number (most scammers rotate numbers daily). Scammer Guardian doesn't care about the number; it cares about what the caller says.
  • It is not a carrier service. It works on top of any carrier like Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, Spectrum Mobile, US Mobile, Mint, or Visible. Your parent keeps their existing phone, number, and carrier.
  • It is not a robocall blocker. It blocks robocalls and live-human scammers. The grandparent scam, romance scam, IRS impersonation: all of these involve live humans, and a robocall blocker has no defense against them.
